Visit Volta with your school!

Volta school groups include:

  • Our state-of-the-art facility offers bouldering and top-rope climbing. Bouldering is a branch of rock climbing where people climb without rope or a harness.

Our bouldering walls are about 15 ft tall and have large mats below them to break falls.

Top roping means the climber is securely attached to a rope that runs through a fixed anchor at the top of the climbing route and includes wearing a harness. Our top rope wall is 40 ft tall. Top rope climbing tends to be easier for first-time climbers, so we often encourage beginning in the ropes area.

  • Staff will always give an introduction to climbing and a safety talk. Instruction on how to tie the follow-through figure 8 knot and basic climbing techniques can be provided upon request.

Additionally, depending on the group size and age, we’ll do a warm-up game to get everyone moving.

  • Group programs are generally 2-3 hours long. During that time, you’ll have access to knowledgeable staff belayers. The number of staff will be dictated by the number of climbers and adhere to a ratio of 6:1.

  • All rentals (climbing shoes, harnesses, and chalk) are included.

Rentals will be handed out by staff at the beginning of the program. Kids are encouraged to bring their own climbing shoes if they have them.

For larger groups (over 20+ kids) climbing shoes will be provided on an as-needed basis since we only have so many shoes in a single size. In that case, students may wear clean sneakers to climb.

Questions and concerns:

  • The flow of the program depends on the number of climbers and age.

Small groups (<15) will be kept together as they move around the gym.

Medium groups (15-40) will be told specific boundaries and be allowed to flow between bouldering and ropes.

Large groups (40+) will be broken down into groups that move around the station. These stations usually include rope climbing 1, rope climbing 2, instruction, bouldering, and rappelling. We are super flexible and will adapt how we run the program depending on your group.

If they already have a Volta waiver they don’t need to do it twice. If your students have never completed a Volta waiver before, the Program Coordinator may send you a specific waiver link so that we can track who has completed it and who hasn’t.

Waivers must be completed by a parent or legal guardian for everyone under 18 years of age.

  • Climbing is a challenge by choice. Our gym offers a diverse range of difficulty levels. We encourage students to know their own limitations and will support them in stepping out of their comfort zone when appropriate.

If a student is afraid of heights we will encourage them to try rope climbing (it tends to feel more secure), but never force them to go higher than they want to. We’ll respect their decision when they want to be lowered and constantly check-in about how they are feeling. We have many easy climbs that can be adapted to be more accommodating if someone is nervous about their physical strength. Usually, some quick notes on technique can make climbing a lot more accessible than we think.

Every single person visiting Volta MUST complete a Volta waiver to be in the facilities.

If you have a certain vision for how you want the program to run, or certain things you would like us to include in our instruction, we are open to collaboration.

    Email chiara@voltaclimbing.com if you’re interested.

  • Depending on the age range of the students we keep a 1:6 chaperone-to-student ratio. Please check in with our Program Coordinator about the ideal number of chaperones for your group.

Even though we are "closed" on Wednesday and Friday mornings we encourage school groups to schedule during those times. It allows us to have the gym to ourselves and makes the program run that much smoother. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are also a good time for programs.

We're closed Mondays until 4 PM for setting up the new climbing routes / general gym maintenance.

  • Mornings are generally better! However, early afternoon still works great.

*We would not recommend scheduling after 4 PM in the afternoon during the school week except on Mondays. We have our Team/ Club teams and the gym starts to get busy.

  • Our minimum age for a program is 5-6 years old (though it would need to be a smaller group and have more chaperones). We don't have a maximum age!

  • Our max limit would be 120 students, though this depends on age.

We've hosted school groups from 5 to 100 students so we're flexible with size and will adjust the format to best fit your group's needs.
